During this Lenten season, our Chaplain, the Reverend Robert Morley, together with Don Giorgio of the Church of San Bartolomeo degli Armeni, officiated the Stations of the Cross each Friday. This partnership between our Anglican and Roman Catholic communities carries an important message for our world today: peace and understanding between faith communities are essential for the future of humanity.
When we pray together, we build bridges between our traditions, fostering mutual understanding rather than ignorance and division.
The Santo Volto of Genoa, known locally as the “Santo Mandillo,” is believed to be the oldest image of Christ. According to ancient tradition, Christ miraculously left the image of His face upon a cloth sent to King Abgar of Edessa. The relic arrived in San Bartolomeo degli Armeni in 1362, where it has been venerated ever since.
This church holds particular significance as the home of the Holy Face of Genoa, believed to be the oldest known depiction of Jesus Christ. It is a most fitting place for such a powerful witness to Christian unity.
We are also deeply grateful for the generous gift of an antique tabernacle from their community, which now has a place upon our altar.
