Advent and Christmas

Christmas in Lockdown

You may have heard a great deal about the coming lockdown and wondered how the latest decree will affect our celebration of Christmas at the Church of the Holy Ghost. The answer is that all services will be held as usual, with the extra option of Communion at the end of the Crib Service on Christmas Eve for those who wish.

We are grateful to the Director of the National Office for Social Communications of the Italian Episcopal Conference, Vincenzo Corrado, for the following information about worshippers’ legal situation, which has been edited and adapted from a communiqué which he issued in reply to to requests for clarification from fellow journalists:

“The Decree setting out further urgent provisions to deal with the health risks associated with the spread of the COVID-19 virus, introduces some limitations to travel during the Christmas period, from 24th December 2020 to 6th January 2021. On 24th-27th, and 31st December 2020 and on 1st-3rd, and 5th-6th January 2021, the measures put in place for the so-called “red zones”, apply. On 28th- 30th December 2020 and 4th January 2021, however, the applicable measures are those put in place for the so-called “orange areas”.

In the situation outlined by the Decree, there are no changes regarding visits to places of worship and celebrations: both are still permitted, in safe conditions and in full compliance with the rules.

“During the days when the “red zone” restrictions apply, the faithful are advised to carry a self-declaration form with them to speed up any control operations. The Circular from the Ministry of the Interior on 7th November 2020 specified that the places of worship where one can go to visit or to participate in a celebration “must reasonably be identified as among those closest”.

“During the days when the “orange zone” rules operate the faithful will be able to visit freely any holy place located in their municipality of residence, domicile or home. If that municipality has a population of no more than 5,000 inhabitants, they can to go to churches located in other municipalities provided that they are not provincial capitals and not more than 30 km away.”
